We got there rather late...well, not really...we were planning on getting there an hour early, but we ended up not getting there till a half hour early...so we were afraid we wouldn't get a spot right up front. When we walked in the floor section, I remember saying "Damn, this place is small". I was expecting it to be huge, considering it's a basketball arena for a rather large university. It was the size of a large high school gym..and they were only using half of it. They had the stage set up on one half of the floor, and the general admission was on the other half, and then the seats up top. There was quite a sizeable crowd gathering right up front. But we just happened to find the only open spot against the barrier...just left of center of the stage, right in front of a 20 foot high stack of speakers...and just out of reach of the hyper ass crowd surfers. I don't enjoy people being dropped on my head...or getting thrown over the barrier myself.
Fear Factory was the first band up. At the time of the concert, I had only been a FF fan for a couple months...but I knew they were gonna be extremely heavy and wild live. I had heard stories of people in the mosh pit being sent to the hospital on their last tour, so I made sure to stay away from it during these guys' set. Right before their set, I asked the security guard right in front of me if I could take pictures, he said he wasn't sure, but I shouldn't anyways...so I didn't get any shots of the first two bands. Anyways, Burton started off talking to the crowd, while the band was quietly playing the background...slowly getting louder...then he goes "ladies and gentlemen...prepare for...SSHHHOOOOOOOOOCCCKKK" and the place went nuts as they started off with Shock...the first track on their newest CD. That moment right there was one of those moments I never forget...and when I hear the beginning of that song on the CD, I like have a flashback. There's only a few other songs that do that to me. One of them being later in their set when they played and when Burton sings "I AMMMM THE WAAAAY! PRE-PARE FOR..SAL-VATION" I get goosebumps when I hear that...seriously. Anyways, it seemed there were just as many people there to see FF as there were to see Rob Zombie. The crowd was so fucking into it...I don't think I've ever seen a more hyper crowd. There was a constant flow of crowd surfers getting thrown over the wall. They'd just go run around and get back in the pit and eventually get thrown right back over again. Near the end, the bassist (who was right in front of me..maybe 15 feet away) was throwing some pics in the crowd...one went right over my head..so I jumped for it and it hits my palm and bounces right out..son of a bitch!...then he throws another one my way...i miss it, as does everybody else, but I wasn't fast enough to hit the floor. Oh well, life goes on. Right before FF's last song, they started pumping up the crowd for the next two bands..."Are you guys ready for some of that devil music known as Monster Magnet?" They proceeded to play about 30 seconds of Spacelord...then, "Or are you ready to hear some satanic Zombie music?" They proceeded to play the beginning of More Human Than Human...the crowd lost it when they did that. Then they played their last song and got a huge ovation as they left. They got almost an hour too...which is surprising considering they were the first of 3 bands.
Next up, Monster Magnet. These guys were quite cool. Nothing real special happened in the first half of their set...but then between two of their songs, Dave started just talking with the crowd....and some guy right up front said something he didn't like...and Dave got extremely pissed. He threw his mic stand across the stage and was like "What the fuck is your problem you little cocksucker? I'll come down there and beat your little pussy ass right now...don't thik I won't. Don't fuck with me and not expect to get fucked back you little dick." Well, that was just a paraphrase, but you get the point. Then, during Negasonic...the second to last song...some other prick started throwing coins at him. After the song, he got even more pissed than before. "Alright people listen here...there's a motherfucker right down here throwing coins at me...and if I get hit in the head one more fucking time, we'll quit right here and leave...it doesn't matter to me." The guy said something..or gave him the finger or something....Dave threw the mic stand across the stage again and got down on top of a speaker right next to the barrier "You little prick! I am seriously gonna beat the living shit outta you! Why don't you come up here and we'll throw down if you think you're such a badass...I will fuck you in the ass so fucking hard you'll never forget it. You know what...we're gonna play this last song and then I'm gonna come out there and fuck you up, dick....c'mon guys, bring out the chicks...start the song". So they start into Spacelord..and out comes a damn fine looking chick...she's dancing around the stage and stuff while the band is playing. Then she pulls her bikini bottom to the side..and starts fingering herself...right on my side of the stage too. God damn I wish I could've taken a picture of this...damn security guard. Then she takes off her top and Dave comes over and starts playing with her tits....the crowd was loving it. Anyways, they only played for maybe 35-40 minutes...but it was damn rockin'. As they were leaving Dave threw in "Hey guys..sorry about that earlier...you were all cool...you guys rock..except for these pricks up here in front". So, here comes another cool part...the roadies came out right away and started tearing down the set. One of em had a setlist, and he points at either me, or the guy right behind me and tells the security guard "give it to him"....so, because I was in front, the scurity guard gives it to me...and the guy behind me gets pissed..."ah c'mon..he said to give it to me...that's shady" I just sat there and didn't say anything...I was afraid I was gonna get my ass beat cause this guy was bigger than me heh. Anyways, right here is that very same setlist.
Last, but not least...the man....Rob Zombie. They had already set up for him before the show, and just placed a huge ass curtain over it for the other bands. The anticipation in that place was so overwhelming when the lights went out..then the curtain started moving forward...fog started coming from behind it....the intro of Superbeast starts...the crowd erupts...and as soon as the song starts, the curtains fall and the pyro goes nuts. God, this was one of those moments that gave me chills, just like those two during FF. He started out almost alternating between his songs, and White Zombie songs..which quite kicked ass...especially during Thunderkiss '65 and More Human than Human. About a half hour into the set, Blasko, the bassist...who was positioned right in front of me most of the show, starts tossing pics our way. None really came close to me...but then I look down at the floor on the other side of the barrier and there's one there. I point it out to the security guard and ask him if he can get it for me. What does the prick do? He picks it up, looks at it and slips it in his pocket. I swear, if he woulda been within reaching distance of me, I woulda suckerpunched the bastard. Moving on...Rob announced that there were cameras all over the place cause they were filming the video for their next single, Living Dead Girl...so we may be on MTV someday....they then start into Living Dead Girl...which rocked the fucking house. Later on, since the guard pissed me off, I decided to go ahead and snap a couple picutres anyways...but then another one comes over and tells me to stop. So, I do. But then during Dragula, this one chick about 10 feet to the right of me decides to get on some guys shoulders and take her top off...this just made this amazing experience all the better. They went on to play about 4 more songs, before Rob said "Just in case you weren't paying attention the first time, we're gonna play Living Dead Girl one more time then we have to go...and for all of you guys out there who have girlfriends here tonight, lift them up on your shoulders so the camera can see em...." So then this other chick right by the one who took her top off earlier, decides to do the same...except this one looks much better. So, then some of the fucking roadies started coming out and snapping pictures of these girls, so I said what the hell and snapped a couple too (you can see the pictures in the pics section). Then I just happen to turn around, and there's two very nice tits right in my face...so I snap those too. At this time, everything was so out of control, the security guards didn't care what anyone did. So I started taking as many pictures of the band as I could, since the last song was almost over with...I ended up getting another 5 or 6...not bad. They only played for about an hour and 15 minutes, which kinda sucked. But I guess I was just used to Soul Coughing and Metallica, both of whom played for 2 and a half hours. It still rocked my world though. And it rocked my ears too. I couldn't hear a fucking thing. On the way home, me and my friend gave up trying to talk to each other, cause every other word was either huh? or what? And the ringing in my ears didn't stop for 8 days. But it was all worth it. This was easily the best concert I've ever been to. Even better than Metallica. Although Metallica probably would be the best if I would've been as close then as I was here. No question about it, this gets a 10.
