I was mainly going to this show to see Incubus. I'd been wanting to see them so bad it didn't matter who they opened for. Luckily it was a band I like somewhat, although I'm not a huge fan - Primus. Anyway, we got there early so we could get a good spot but there was already at least 100 people in line. However we did end up getting like the last open spot on the barrier...about 20 or 30 feet left of the center of the stage, so we camped out there for the next hour.
The first and was Buckethead...although band isn't the right term here because it's one guy on guitar playing over pre-recorded music. Sounds pretty stupid doesn't it? Actually it's not stupid at all....First off, he's a fucking guitar god...I've never seen anyone play guitar like that. Second, his costume is fuckin great..he's got a KFC bucket on his head, a plain white mask and a yellow raincoat. Third, he doesn't just stand there and play guitar...he's got plenty of props, and let's just say he can do The Robot like no other. He got quite a good crowd reaction...although there were a few idiots that kept saying he wasn't actually playing....morons, really. He did a good job of keeping it short...about 25 or 30 minutes....cause it did start to get boring and people were getting restless.
Incubus. If you haven't heard them, god you're missing out. They've got such a unique funk-metal sound. No, not funk-metal like RHCP or Fishbone....nah, these guys got so much more. And damn I was psyched to see them. As soon as the lights went out, Brandon started playing the intro of Redefine with this weird tribal-like woodwind instrument....slowly building up....then everything let's loose as they break into the song. I wasn't planning on doing much moshing cause I had a fucked up ankle, but as soon as that happened I couldn't control myself...I left my spot and dove straight into the pit. And what a fun pit it was. Not too violent, with no assholes throwing elbows and fists everywhere, just plain fun....and not a whole lot of huge people...in fact, there were quite a few people smaller than me, which was quite fun heh. Surprisingly they played more songs from their previous album than the new one....which I liked cause I knew the songs better and they were more upbeat, making for more moshing time. It seemed like they were only out there for about 20 minutes but it was probably 45 or 50...they played about 10 songs....5 or 6 from S.C.I.E.N.C.E. and 4 or 5 from Make Yourself.
By this time I was exhausted from jumping around and my ankle felt like it was broken so we headed up to the balcony....amazingly it took us forever to find a seat....I wasn't expecting the show to sell out like it did. We finally found a couple seats that were higher than they were far away from the stage, which lent for a nice view for Primus. I'm not a big fan, but I do have two of their cds so I know a few songs. It was nothing real special, but it did have a few highlights. Like when in the middle of My Name Is Mud, they broke into the one and only Crazy Train by Ozzy. And Buckethead came out several times.....once to play one of his songs that Les sings on....that was pretty fucking badass. Overall, nothing spectacular but they weren't bad either. Rating: 9
