Keep in mind I'm writing this almost 5 months after the fact, so a lot of the details might be a little sketchy.
Well, considering this was my first ever concert, I wasn't real sure what to expect...but since it ended up being so good, it set a high standard for all my other concerts. Well, we got there right as the doors were opening. Stopped by the t-shirt stand on the way to our seats...which already had a 10 minute wait......got a couple shirts of course. We had lawn tickets (here's a map of the place), right behind section 32 there. So we were probably 200-250 feet away.
First up was Days of the New. A lot of people call them AIC rip-offs...which I don't really understand, considering they're an acoustic band and AIC isn't! Fucking morons. I don't see people saying NIN ripped off KMFDM...ohh no. Anyways, I'm quite a big DotN fan, so I was looking forward to this...unlike 95% of the people there. These guys were absolutely fucking rocking live...hearing a good acoustic band live is almost as enjoyable as a good hummer. Even though Travis (the lead singer) wasn't real into it...although he's not the most outgoing person from what I've seen...but it's all good. They got to play for about 45 minutes...played most of the songs off their debut cd...and 2 songs I've never heard before...one of which was a very cool instrumental which had me grooving in my seat..err grass..that's right, I didn't have a seat. And to finish off their set, they played one of my favorite songs of all time, "The Down Town". But what pisses me off, is right before it, Travis said "this is our last song" to paraphrase....and people fucking started cheering. What fucking assholes. If you didn't wanna see the opening band, why the hell did you come so early? And how would you like it if you were in a band and basically got booed? Fucking pricks...at least show some respect to these people who have to pay the rent by making music. How would you like it if someone came to your job and started busting your balls saying you suck? Bah..I'm done ranting now..sorry. Anyways, DotN rocked..end of story.
Next up...Jerry Cantrell. Now, I am a huge Alice in Chains fan...and one of my goals in life is to see the whole band live. But half of the band will have to do for now. Jerry was very cool and very into it. Talking with the crowd and shit..."hey, get off your asses...this is a concert not a fucking political rally!". What really got the crowd going was when they played a couple AIC songs...I think Got Me Wrong, Heaven Beside You, and two others I can't seem to recall right now. They played for about 45 minutes also. And then they closed with Pink Floyd's Dark Side of the Moon (at least I think that's the name of the song)...which was so fucking amazing...I know I'm sounding fruity, but that song was so damn beautiful...especially done by Jerry. I know I'll never forget it.
And now...what everyone had come for...Metallifuckinca. It took them a little over an hour to set up the pyro and lights and shit, so we knew were in for one helluva show. They were playing music while this was going on....after about 40 minutes, after each song ended, the crowd would start going nuts...then when the next one started up, there was one big collective sigh....it was mildy amusing if you ask me. Then..finally...the lights went out...and everyone in that place lost it. 20,000 people yelling at the top of their lungs...my god it was amazing. And then...when the band came out one by one...you couldn't hear yourself think. They started off with a full version of Master of Puppets,...which, according to my friend I went with, they never do. And of course there were about 15 different mosh pits in the lawn area...I was right at the edge of one. It's fun tossing people back in when they get tossed out heh. They played about 4 or 5 older songs. Then moved onto another 4 or 5 songs from the Black Album and later. It was quite funny, during One and Nothing Else Matters, everybody brought out the lighters...but some people thought they'd be creative and start a trash fire...well, considering the only trash around the place was plastic cups and condoms (they were passing out free condoms heh), it stunk like a motherfucker. Anyways, then they went off stage...some of the roadies came out and started setting up some stools and acoustic guitars. Then the band comes back out for an acoustic encore. They started off with Low Man's Lyric, then Four Horsemen, and then finished off with Motorbreath. They went off stage...then like 5 minutes later, James comes back out and says "What, you guys are still here? Does that mean you want more?" The crowd goes crazy of course. So they come back out for a second encore...back to electric this time. They started off with Sad But True...one of the five songs I really wanted to hear...then Enter Sandman..another one of those 5 (the others were Wherever I May Roam, One, and For Whom the Bell Tolls)...and then they finished off with Creeping Death. I was so fucking physically and emotionally spent by this time, I could barely walk back up the fucking hill...that's how awesome the show was. The only thing I was disappointed with was they didn't play For Whom the Bell Tolls, but I think I'll live. They played for more than fucking two and a half hours....now that's getting your money's worth...4 and a half hours of rocking music. Oh yeah, if you wanna read some more reviews and see some pictures, check out metontour.com right here. Overall, this concert definitely gets a 10 (out of 10)...I can't even imagine what it would've been like if I had been up in front, instead of a mile and a half away.
